Bernardo de Barros "Maluk"

dancer, coreographer, musical composer, writer, stage director, producer

 

Sao Paulo, BR, 1976. Dancer, choreographer, percussionist, musical composer and producer: debuted at age 16 as a chorus dancer of the Ana Esmeralda Flamenco Ballet in the bosom of the Flamenco Cultural Association from Brazil who would remain linked until 1999 occupying the positions of soloist, guest dancer and teacher. Student of Pedro de Jaén, who taught him all was relevant to the character of each suit on choreographic flamenco and its musical cannons.

 

At age 18 he began participating in other artistic formations in character of dancer invited and hired by the Conservatory of Arts, Carlos Gomes, he moved to Campinas, SP, to teach there flamenco dance. He produced his first show at the age of 19, called "ENCUENTRO FLAMENCO", arguing a generational encounter between the old musicians responsible for the introduction of the flamenco in Sao Paulo and young dancers who carried it out.

At age 19, in the IV Festival of dances of MERCOSUR, held in Bento Gonçalves, RS, presenting a farruca, own choreographic work in original composition of Sabicas, received the award to the best dancer, soloist and best choreography, was honored as stand out soloist dancer from the festival. He meets Felipe Sánchez, Assistant to the direction, choreographer and choreographic repeater with the National Ballet, with whom he establishes a diciple relationship.

 

From 1997 to early 1999 acts alongside the best Flamenco musicians established in Brazil.

 

He participated in the Interdanzas Festival in Asunción, PR, presenting a choreography beyond standards set by the Organization, as a protest against the limitation imposed in the artistic expression of the creators at that festival gaining the public admiration as starting to demonstrate the rebel character that marc him as an creator and artist today.

He was a dancer soloist in the Bizet's opera Carmen, directed by Marcos Aurelio and presented at the teatro Municipal de São Paulo; soloist in the Misa Flamenca de Paco Peña, dancing the our father, commissioned by the Consulate General of Spain in Sao Paulo and presented in the church NOSSA SENHORA DO BRASIL.

 

At age 22, invited by his teacher Felipe Sánchez, he moved to Madrid, to integrate into the company ESPAÑA DANZA, whose choreography was signed by Alberto Lorca, Cristóbal Reyes, Manuel Nuñez and the same Felipe. Disillusioned by the artistic rigidity of the company decides to leave it well as a career in the field of dance companies.

 

Holder of an extraordinary talent for the plastic and stylistic assimilation of gestures and movements, with a lush technique for the execution of Zapateado, sure about his vocation for the scene, he felt the lack live flamenco beyond the 4 walls of the study. Meet "LOS SALAO" Gypsy group, and with them goes to live the street performance experience and participating fully in their lifestyle. During this stage, performs some actions with the flamenco singer "El Mochi" and at the private tablado LAS ROSAS from Luisa Ortega, daughter of Manolo Caracol.

He meets Marisol Jardim, Brazilian singer who usually worked with him in Brazil, and together they begin to weave an artistic ideology which would then lead to the anarkoflamenco, basing it structure in the absorption of the flamenco art by Brazilian culture and the opposite, influenced by the “antropofago-culturales” ideals promoted during the Brazilian modernism. Together the guitarists Antonio Prieto and Francisco Prieto presented in Madrid, in the Garibaldi, the first trial anarkoflamenco, entitled "Horse without shadow".

 

In 2000, returning from Ukraine after a month of performances in a FLAMENCO stage, pursued by the Madrid police for his performances of dance in the street, he had feel forced to change residence deciding to go to Barcelona, where he met the members of the band Ojos de Brujo, who invite him to participate in their project. He has collaborated with the band during the release of their first album Vengue, his consequent European tour and the recording of the second album Bari, while acting in the street.

 

Accompanied by drummers in their street performances he has translated what at the beginning was Flamenco percussion with the feet and body expression drived by the noise impact of the offered rhythms, making its scenic redoubt where he has searched a technical improvement in his tap technic, looking rough to the theatre and the art Street.

He traveled to Brazil to be reunited with the psychologist, psychiatrist, and theatrical director, Juan Uviedo, President of Association VIVA CRIANÇA, to work at his side. With the death of Juan in the year of 2009 and after have occupied the post of flamenco dance in the PÁSSARO DE FOGO dance school for a semester, he returned with his family to Barcelona where he began to produce a new project, THE BROKEN BOOTS.

 

He made a first stage venture featuring the musical repertoire of BROKEN BOOTS in the room Apolo of Barcelona to start, immediately after it, the recording of the album. Launches the show at the beginning of 2012 which derives an audiovisual documentary called THE NEW GYPSYS TOUR BEGINS.

 

During the year of 2013 lives in Mexico away from dance to constitute cultural enterprises. However he presents his pocket show named VIENTO DE ARENA presenting it at the BATACLAN TEATRO. On the other hand he was engaged to write his dance method SYSTEMA ANARKOFLAMENCO.

In 2002 he has left the collaboration with Ojos de Brujo to produce the show "GRITO Anarkoflamenco" presenting it at the space OVEN of Barcelona. Was also involved in feature film AMAS, from the catalan Director, Xavier Ribera, sharing the screen with Najwa Nimri and Eloy Azorín.

 

In 2004, as well integrating Didier Labbé Jazz Octet, Mediterranean Jazz project resident in Toulouse and making a tour in France, Spain and Portugal, he opens the project FIVE IN Anarkoflamenco Quintet in Barcelona, his first approach as musical composer writing jazz fusion songs.

 

Prolific year, he begins immediately after the accomplishment of “¡JAM! Anarkoflamenco Quartet” and integrates the Catalan band CALIMA, nominated for a Grammy in 2007.

 

He carried out numerous performances with JAM! and he made a tour to Mexico until mid-2006, in addition producing in Aztec soil the until now not edited documentary DE AMORES about the show presented at the ORIGINA ART GALLERY.

 

Returning to Barcelona, decides to abstain from art projects to make a documentary about artistic life on the streets of Barcelona becoming activist for the rights of artistic performances in urban spaces. He is chased by the Catalan public administration and is imprisoned by dancing in the street.

In June 2014, he travels to the Avignon Festival in France, and after 2 months of travelling around Europe decided to settle down in Paris for love reasons. After a heartbreak he decides to move to Switzerland where he currently resides and from where he manages his projects.

 

Respected for their quality and professionalism, musicians such as Juan Leprovost, founder/bassist of Ojos de Brujo; Antonio el Cordobés, guitarist who has joined El Güito and El Farruco; Sol Brazil, vocalist of the Barcelona project "Chinatown"; ElJulito and El Potaje Sara Baras percussionists; Thibaud Dufoy, Didieer Labbé, Marco Mezquida, Victor de Diego, among many others, have integrated his projects endorsing his performing and musical creations.

 

He has performed in some of the most emblematic theatres and music festivals in Europe.
